About Me

I am an Associate Professor and Interim Associate Chair in the Department of Computer Science at Saint Louis University, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. I am also a core faculty member of the Graduate Program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and an Adjunct Professor at the AI Graduate School at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in South Korea. I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Virginia Tech in 2012, an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Northwestern University, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Yonsei University in South Korea. Before joining academia, I worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Samsung SDS and held postdoctoral and research positions at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

I lead the Ahn Lab (BioHPC Lab), where our research focuses on developing innovative software tools to analyze big data — principally in biological, health, and biomedical domains — using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced computational techniques on High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, including supercomputers, GPU clusters, and cloud platforms. My work spans bioinformatics, metagenomics, single-cell RNA-seq analysis, and deep learning for biomedical applications.

I currently serve as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Microbiomes and have served on technical program committees for ACM-BCB and IEEE-BIBM. I am a member of ACM, IEEE, and ISCB. For more details, please see my publications, Google Scholar, or CV (PDF).
